SINGAPORE — Escalating tensions between Iran and the United States are reshaping global travel, with Singaporeans increasingly opting for regional destinations amid uncertainty. Since the war began on Feb 28, more than 52,000 flights have been cancelled, according to aviation data provider Cirium. Travel experts note that long-haul trips through Middle Eastern airspace face delays, higher fares, and rerouting.
Global Travel
Lightfoot Travel reported a 35% rise in Asia bookings globally between February and March, as travellers seek safer, closer options. In Singapore, bookings fell 25% in early March, though inquiries remained steady. Popular destinations include Japan, China, Indonesia, and Thailand, with Skyscanner data showing strong searches for Tokyo, Bangkok, Seoul, Bali, and Kuala Lumpur.
Flights to Europe may require up to three extra hours to avoid conflict zones, while routes to South Africa and Latin America remain unaffected. Airlines including Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and AirAsia have introduced fuel surcharges amid soaring costs.
